Chrome Plating Intake Manifold

This winter, when I'm redoing my car, I plan on taking some parts out of the engine and having them chrome plated. One of the things that I definitly want to do is have my intake manifold plated. Does anyone know if this will hurt performance or anything in any way? Any thoughts on it? Thanx.

Batlord had his done, and he kept it for about 6-9 months, then sold/gave it to someone else who now uses it on their daily driver.
outside of adding a bit of weight, it should be just fine.

I thought Bat had his "HOT" plate chromed, not his intake manifold.
As for losses, I agree with Random, a little weight, maybe even a bit better heat rejection, although the IM gets most of its heat from direct contact with the head.

I would NOT reccomend having the IM Chromed. It is cast aluminum, it will not take the chrome plating well so polishing it might be a cheaper, and better alternative. The chrome will also keep heat in and hurt performance.
I would suggest a "ceramic" coating. Most come in various colors, and actually HELP performance.
If you want to do it, I don't think it will SERIOUSLY hurt performance, but it will slow you down due to increased intake manifold temps, and the IM heating the Intake air more.

Hmm...ceramic coating...sounds like an idea. What about Powder Coating? I definitly don't want to hurt performance, so Chrome Plating is out. I guess I'll look at either polishing, or powder coating.
I just want to do something different with it, because as of right now, It's just sitting there under my strut bar, and I have my spare Team SR sticker on it. rolleyes.gif Detailing it up, and doing the small things like that will definitly help bring more points to engine bay at shows.

Polishing will keep heat in as well, but not nearly as bad as Chrome Plating.
Power Coating also acts as an insulating layer, and would keep heat in.
The Ceramic Coating is a layer on the inside that does not transfer heat, but smooths air flow, and another layer out the outside to reflect radiant heat. It should be about $140 to $200 for the Ceramic Coating.

Hey, if you're mainly looking to use this IM for shows, then why not have two IMs? Have one that you use for your daily driving and racing, and then chrome or polish the other one, and put that one in only when you're at shows...

BTW...using pure ass Guesstimate numbers.
Chrome plating the IM would cost you 3 Hp
Powdercoating would cost you 2 Hp
Polishing would cost you 1 hp
Ceramic Coating would gain you 2-3 HP.

Too much of a pain in the butt to keep changing it. Besides, I think I'm either gonna go for ceramic coating. If I can't find any places around here that do that...then I'll just get it polished. Won't really matter if I lose only 1 hp. tongue.gif
