I'm thinking about buying an aftermarket cam gear for my beta 1 soon but I'm really not sure how to get the best proformace out of it idk what degree would be best ive done a little research and I'm seeing "Retarding" the timing would give the most power but I'm a bit confused if someone could some it up for me I'd appreciate it a lot
All depends if your running boost or not. retarding will increase overlap as it is not needed for exhaust scavenging
NA you normally advance the cam to try and eliminate overlap.
And don't take this personally but I wouldn't even touch it until you understand what you actually doing by mechanically adjusting the cam timing

ok thats what i was confused i understand mechanically what it is doing to increase power.
and my car is n/a
im confused when you say "overlap" from my understanding you move the timing as which the spark plug will fire

You can get either a little more high end horsepower, or a little more low end torque NA. You can adjust where your torque peak sits a bit but unless you're going for the highest possible peak dyno numbers or fixing an actual problem throwing an adjustable timing gear at your car won't do a lot. You'll be making approximately the same amount of torque overall under the curve.
On the Beta you can't adjust intake and exhaust cams separately so you can't eliminate valve overlap. This is due to the cams being tied together via a chain at the rear of the head vs. two cam gears at the front of the head.
This has nothing to do with when your spark plugs fire. At all. Advancing timing can actually make more power, but you can't do this with a cam gear. Cam gears can just adjust when you make the power.

I believe it was Kspec that did offer an adjustable exhaust sprocket for the beta. Can't remember who I got mine from. But they are more rare than an Airram these days
But a majorority of people that have cam sprockets, and this goes for ALL "tuners", Install them, set them to 0 and proceed to cut a hole in their timing cover to expose it.

yeah i was just trying to make a little more power out of my 2.0 before i go boost. but i might just tune it n/a on an apexi i have laying around just to see how much of a gain i could get. lol the honda vs hyundai is getting to be a big thing in the area need to show them these betas arent push overs
