CAI / Engine Pinging

I have the new Barney BBTB, 3" home made intake, MSD and gutted cat on the smae engine you got. If your engine is pinging it is not because it is the CAI. Well it is but it should not be pinging with the CAI installed. Check your spark plugs as well. What kind are you using, when did you replace/clean them last. When is the last time you ran a injector cleaner through your system? I have no probs with my setup using low grade fuel in 95+ degree heat here in texas nor 60 degree temps at night in Hawaii.
I put in a 1/3 of a tank of 93 octane on top of the 2/3 of a tank of 87 and the pinging went away. Unfortuneatly I had to autocross on a full tank of gas because of this.
The pinging did stop once the computer saw it. I wasn't paying atttention to the note from the intake however.
I will say the pinging was hard to make out over the sound from the intake. If I had an exhaust on the car I doubt I would be able to hear it at all.

You know, it may have just been a bad tank of gas. It shouldn't ping even on "good" 87 octane, even with your MAP sensor and the CAI.
These cars are programmed way on the rich side from the factory to give the owners a LOT of leeway for error. MAP cars will be the first ones to start running lean with N/A upgrades, but you should still definately be within the safety of the over-rich stock fuel programming.
It might just be a case of bad gas... You never know.

LOL! Nah, 87 should be fine. If you're up here in NM, I even ran the Tiburon on 85 octane one time just to see what it would do (while I still had the stock ECU, years ago wink ) And actually it did ping once in a while, but it's the fawkin hot desert, what do you expect? wink
I say fill it up with your 87, go steal the ScanTool from the shop and watch your short term fuel trims and your timing advance. If your fuel trims are pegged high, you know that you're running lean. You can also watch for the car to pull timing with the advance readout when you're on the gas.
Might take a shop buddy with ya so you're not fidgeting with the $3000 scan tool while flooring the car down the back street

I should have thought of that I have a scan tool and a mod happy tech right in front of me. We will take it for a ride wednesday (wife has it today need to put shocks in my truck tomorrow). Thanks for the obvious answer that was right in front of me the whole time.
