Default CAI / Engine Pinging

Here is the situation I have a 2.0l with a map sensor. I installed my own CAI. It is using 3" diameter pipe heatwrapped with a K&N Xstream filter in the fender routed the same as the 03 Tib CAI. The system works good but I have one problem. When I accelerate full throttle in first and second I can here the engine pinging. I assume the timing is being changed to stop the pinging therefore loosing power. What do people think about running 93 octane? I was going to Autocross tomorrow and am pretty sure the tank has 87 octane in it. I have only used a third of a tank and was going to try and fill the last third with 93 octane but I don't know if this will even fix my problem. The car of course ran fine before it was getting to much air. What is everyones opinion or has anyone had this happen to them yet?

It should not be pinging at all.

IT should not need more then 87 octane, specially a brand new 2002.

You sure it was the engine pinging?
I am wondering if the CAI is hitting something and you are mistaking that for engine ping.

I am positive it is pinging The CAI has absolutely no place it can hit and rattle. I am guessing it has something to do with the large amount of air it is getting. The pinging is most noticeable from about 2000rpm to 4000rpm I don't know if it is doing it above that since it gets too loud.

well does it do in while parked and reving it up? If not put the old intake back on and see if it still does it. If it does then it the eng, if it don't then it's the cai. just my methods of trouble shooting.

I already know it is the CAI. And revving it in a parking lot won't put the engine under load which is when it happens. Thanks for the idea. smile.gif

try some high octane fuel. It cannot hurt.

If you have an option...burn as much of the 87 octane as you can before adding the 93 octane. Also, alwasys try to autocross with under 1/4 of a tank. Less weight....*evil grin*

I just got back from topping off the tank with 93 octane. It is not pinging anymore I hope that it is the same in the heat tomorrow. My wife is not happy the car is going to have to use 93 octane $1.81 gal. I guess I better get her new Minivan soon so she dosen't take my car anymore.

The ECU should be more than capable of adding more fuel to accomodate the additional air flow of the new CAI.

I would not try this on autocross day, but I would leave your battery unplugged for about 15-20 minutes, and then try to go for a drive. Try to work the car through all RPM ranges and every throttle position in each RPM range. The ECU will then adjust. The problem is...once you give the car to your wife, and she drives it sedately, the ECU will then readjust the fuel curves back down. I've heard from multiple folks who HATE the way their engine behaves after someone else has driven in sedately for a week or so.

maybe its not engine pinging..it could be piston slap
if you heard pinging woudn't it automaticly retard the timing then the engine would loose a bit of its bass sound get a higher pitch to it
