It improves performance because it sucks in cooler (denser) air rather than the hot air in your engine bay that's why its positioned lower than the engine.

If you want SHOW quality with performance, go AEM. Slap a K&N on the end of the Ebay one like that which is on the AEM, and you might be 1-2hp behind the AEM. AEM intake s0x0rz at high RPM anyway. I think it only gains 3whp at topend over stock.
