Big Problems
Alright hey guys i know i havent posted for awhile but heres whats what...my 2001 tibby is acting up to the fullest extent. I took out the aftermarket parts (except for the LevelTen upgraded TQ) and put everything back in stock (that would be Intake and Throttle Body) i also have full exhaust but hey give me credit i did all this in my lunch break at work (1 hour) with crappy tools. Anyway now everytime i start the sucker it idles like a madman between 2000 and 1000, and every 10 seconds or so is sounding like its going to die. The next great part of this fiasco IS that when i turn this car on...huge amounts of constant black smoke come pouring out of my exhaust. i opened up the throttle (by hand in engine bay) and that stuff just pours out even faster...now i have a black spot on my driveway, a dead tiburon, and im SOL, because nobody ive talked to in town will offer me some advice...the only guys who can do it can do it TOMORROW! (im carless, yet again) and for 68 bucks to TELL me what the problem is...not to fix it...to TELL me...anyway i was hoping maybe one of you might have an idea.

Well, i'd double check the MAF sensor and make sure that the harness is plugged in becuase if it wasn't, you'd be getting the idle fluctuations like you're having now since the car doesn't see any air comming in and therefore doesn't know how much fuel to inject for a good AirFuel ratio. When i had my '94 Escort LX i unplugged my MAF wiring harness (engine running) to find my car doing what you're describing! However i didn't have any black smoke. I know if a car is blowing white smoke it could be a blown head gasket or if it's spewing blue smoke it's a oil seal leak problem. Black? Well, i'm just not sure! Hope this helps. good luck!

US Vehicle, MAP smile.gif
*EDIT Updated* But hey you were right on, seems that my dad had put the MAP in the opposite direction, he had to come by my work and finish the last couple of steps because my lunch time had gone over a little and i had to get inside, since three people called in sick. Now I have to return my shops tools before they find em missing (didnt have his toolbox along with him)

Nope, they're MAF. MAP for the 02 elantras.
MAF sensor is the tube in your intake pipe. MAP sensor has no tube, it plugs into the manifold. It's also not directional; pressure doesn't care what direction it's coming from.

"IT" was a map? That answers your whole question if you are talking about the black flow meter in your intake. MAF = Mass Air Flow. You have a MAFS, Mass Air Flow Sensor. A flow meter in your intake wouldn't exactly measure your MAP, Manifold Absolute Pressure. Trust me, I have an '01 tib and I live in Iowa. I don't think I am running around with some accidental korean tib here in the states. wink I am worried that someone who put in a TC from Level Ten is wondering whether their '01 tib is MAF or MAP. We have all failed you... j/k. I am glad to know that someone learned something new about their car.

No i got that idea because I remember reading a topic about how most MAFs were in Korea...then whenever I posted something about my car i noted MAP, to Random, to Cheuk, etc. And they never mentioned i was in the wrong. I never asked what it stood for so yeh ;P
