has anyone replaced this before?

i recently got a CEL for voltage to high. which came up as alternator voltage regulator.

I find a new reg at autozone for 53$ or a new alternator for 170.

so i just want to replace the part thats needed, as it still charges well. just overcharges.

Go ask a local alternator rebuild shop what they will charge to replace the regulator. You might be really surprised.

It is really not a big deal if you don't mind risking a non-functional alternator, but there is the risk. You have to pull the back cover, and if I recall correctly it just unbolts. You'll want to dress the brushes and sliprings, which can leave the entire alternator nonfunctional if you mess it up.

That said, when you put a voltmeter on the battery terminals and rev the engine, how high does the voltage go?

hmm..

well i went out there earlier, started it. hooked up a multimeter and it read about 14.35-14.38 when i revved it or was just idling.

But there was no check engine light this time. So ill have to try it when the CEL is on, and see what the results are.

Anyone have an idea what the problem is? if its not the regulator. Its a new battery, so its not that.

13.5-14.4 are both well within the "normal" range fellows! You are both set, no worries!

KC, does it measure higher right at the charging terminal at the alternator? You might have a bad connection somewhere.

i just dont understand why somtimes there is a CEL, and the car seems boggy when the CEL is on for the Voltage Too High...

could the regulator work fine one time, and the next let it overcharge?

I'm having a weird problem with my voltage regulator. I don't get a CEL, but when I rev my engine, the voltage goes up, the blower spins louder, my clock gets brighter and my airbag light comes on. No Overvoltage CEL though. It may be that I'm driving a 2001 vehicle with a 90's ECU. Just thought I'd throw that out there. I'm sure it's due to my overly loaded electrical system and will be fixed soon enough.

DTN thats my prob too. Minus the 90's ecu. At idle it s around 133 sometimes and as rpms rise it gos up higher but not over 13.7. I use to do db drags and it always was around 14.1 at idle but ever since Ive turboed it , it hasnt ever been higher then it is know.
