compulady5, after 2.5 years, my paint hasn't worn off at all. The CAP has discolored a bit but I only did 3 coats on it.
cdogtibby1, makes a huge difference and looks like shit. You can see the black around the lettering and you may get oversprayor seepage. It's very easy to take off, and besides, you will need a place to hang it to dry it. I've seen it done both ways, the tape looks like shat.

ok so i have conflicting ideas here.... the guy im gonna be doing all this with says that we should just tape it all off and paint it because it shouldnt seep in.... but haha i wanna go with redz and just take them all the way off... have you had any problem with the tape wanting to come back up? like lifting the emblems off the cover.
I taped the "Hyundai" emblem cause it wouldn't pry itself out. I used electrical tape (it was all I could find and was just wide enough), then used precision scissors to follow the groove of the emblem outline. No problem and it peeled right off after the paint was dry. The other one (DOHC) came right off the cover but was the hardest and took the longest due to picking the old double faced tape off. So since I did both, I can tell you it doesn't matter, and that there's more than one way to skin a cat. As long as the outcome is the same, whatever works for you. BTW- it helps to have a steady hand!! ;-)

The holes are no biggie, if water gets in there it just runs off from your valve cover.
If you drill the holes like I said, it's VERY easy to get both of the plates off.
