I was wondering where this topic would go since I didnt see the a help section but I guess this was the place. Well anyways its seems that the 00 Tib I just bought (45k miles) sometimes doesnt want to go into first gear. I would literally have to run the tranny through 2nd 3rd and then 4th sometimes for it to go into first. Anyone run into this kind of problem. I was hoping a tranny flush would do, but wasnt sure as of yet...any ideas anyone?

and of course, im at a complete stop when I try this so thats not the problem....im hoping the tranny is not goin bad on me, already, the car is in great conditon for it being 4 yrs old

You're not alone, my 01 does the same thing. unfortunately, I haven't found a cure yet. I've had the car since 19k miles, (58k now), and it started about 10k ago. It was a gradually growing problem, so much that I didn't notice it right away. I changed the tranny fluid and that didn't help. I switched out my stock shifter for a shorty, and the problem remained the same, so it's not the shifter. anyone else?

It can be hard to get the Tib into 1st gear. I've found the easiest way is to let your foot of the clutch, go to neutral, clutch again, then shif.t

I belive it's set like that so you don't downshift into 1st on ACCIDENT.

I doubt it, Redz. First on any trany is harder to get into when the car is moving due to the ratios of the gears involved.. but when sitting, it should not make a difference WHAT gear you are going into.

Ehh, it was explained to me that way years ago on HA.com. Same reason you can't intentionally shift into 6th on the RD (REVERSE).

the reason 1st is harder to shift into is because there is no synchro for first. the best way is to double clutch(this is what people had to do before synchros) cluch, neural, take foot off clutch, clutch then go into first

Mine does the same thing sometimes with 1st, but where I have the most trouble is 2nd when changing down (even with double clutching).

it's not exclusive to tibs. my first car, a kia sephia, a winter beater had the same problem goin both into first and reverse and it was a 99 with 60k miles seemed to be taken care of well.

Yea ive definitely had problems shifting into first after coming to a complete stop. The best way Ive figued to do it is shift to second and shift right back up to first. Most of the time it'll go in, other times, not so good.
