HOW TO: Smoke your own Accent tail lights
By zeroindigo
what you need:
1500 grit samd paper
Transparent black window tint spray *for models* (available at most hoby shops)
-1 can per light
what to do:
-remove tail lights
-wet sand tail lights thouroughly! any spots you miss will come out bad looking, sanding in small circles untill fine white foam appears should be sufficient. NOTE: tape off any areas that you dont want dark (IE reflectors)
-dry tail lights thouroughly, they should have a haze to them like this:
-heat up spray cans by soaking in hot water for a few minutes
-before spraying make sure lights are in a postion to minimize dripping
-lay on a *VERY* light coat and let dry completely (20-25min) before proceding to lay on thicker coats maintaining either horizontal or vertical spray paterns on both lights.
-5-6 coats per light should be plenty dark let each coat dry 5-10min between coats
-before reinstalling lights let cure for 30-40min to ensure clean smooth finnish.

So is there any finished pics to show end results? I know everyone that would do this, the outcome would be slightly diff. But would help for a visual. Thx for posting this.

PICS!
This is vinyl (Which I sell For this specific reason)
This is Nite Shades Spray tint on My Accent (which you can get on eBay)
BTW 6-7 Coats of niteshades is way too dark! 3-4 very lite coats should be plenty Dark For safety's sake!

BTW VHT Nite-Shades is the product to use. The hobby tint stuff will work but it's not the best option.
It looks great with a good clearcoat over the Nite-Shades also.
I'm going to tint my emblems and tail lights on the Accent.

i didn't clear the tails on the accent. I polished them with plasti-X.

Yeah, I've seen vinyl, plain, polished, and clearcoated next to each other and IMO nothing compares to the clearcoated tails. It would probably work well with a flat paint job, but most of us don't have flat paint jobs. They look better than stock w/o the clearcoat, but the clearcoat really makes the tails look professional.
For example, these and mine.
