I have one. Never know when cell networks might go out, or my battery will die. I never use it, but I only pay $9 a month to have it for peace of mind.

I haven't had a land line in over 10 years. Cell phone only.

I had mine for peace of mind also, and it was only used for my wife to call her mom long distance (on a calling card no less). Then I realized, if the sh*t really hits the fan I'm screwed regardless so I cut the land line and went to a Magic Jack for the same price per YEAR that AT&T was charging per MONTH.

Our PC has a 12V battery backup (also powers the networking stuff), which in a severe pinch could run for maybe a few hours. If the ISP has a power backup too, we'd be golden for phone service on magic jack still. I figure, if cell service and electricity are both dead, I'm probably about to be inconvenienced somewhere between "late for work" and "part of The Initial Die-Off" anyway. I don't use the magic jack for calls, I use my cellyphone. We get 'free' long distance on it though, so the wired phone/magic jack is basically only used for my wife to call her mom because the old lady doesn't have a cell phone and we'd use minutes on our plan about 2 hours at a whack, and that means some pretty severe overage charges.
