Oh.. it will download the entire map before you start driving.

Yes it will, but consider the obvious problem, if you're somewhere without data access and you're lost and try to use navigation.....

I prefer to have nav software with maps on memory card.

Many people are using the cheap Acer A100 with ICS without problems. Maybe I'll go that route.

A100 uses the Tegra 2 processor and has been abandoned since Android 4.0 came out. The device is irrelevant today. I don't know if you care, but that device will never get Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean, not to mention the upcoming Key Lime Pie... from what I'm reading, ICS on that device has a ridiculous amount of problems.

I'm in the process of writing an article for the front page of XDA about maintainability of the 3.4 Linux Kernel. You want a device which will get 3.4. Any device which gets that will be upgradable to ANY future Linux Kernel and therefore future versions of android will be easier.

Stick with Nexus for now. Once other devices get 3.4 Linux kernel, that's when I will recommend them.

In terms of cars... think of Linux 3.4 as a lifetime Powertrain warranty.

I assume the Nexus7 will get 3.4. If not, it will be the shortest lived life cycle of a device ever.

Well my uses for the device would be somewhat limited.

Bluetooth connectivity for Torque app

WiFi for transferring files from home network

Video playback for cruising with the wife

Audio output to hardwire into Aux jack

GPS app that downloads maps and is accessible when driving without needing tether or WiFi. I'm hearing Nexus 7 (like Acer) has offline GPS

I don't need it to be fast, as I can't imagine using the device for anything more than the above. I want to spend $100-150 for something used. Must be 7".. I'll take any advice you can give

Aiming for this below. I already have the LCD relocator kit and Coupe bezel on the way, along with a Magellan 1700. Will be upgrading the GPS unit to a tablet after I've messed with the GPS a bit:

FYI - there are options for nav apps that will download regional maps for use offline.
