Anyone use anything other than AVG for free security software? How does it compare to AVG, Norton, McAfee, etc?

Comcast provides Norton for free. Bank of America customers can obtain McAfee (or is it Norton?) for free. I've never had to buy AV software, there's always someone giving it away

I tend to trust the guys who have been doing it for longer. Those are the ones who have records of old virus and better heuristics. I dunno if I would trust a Microsoft computer to Microsoft AV. Microsoft's virus problem is caused by Microsoft's own business policies in the name of "user experience". I highly doubt that their software will do anything but the bare minimum.

Actually, the best virus protection is currently "Run Linux". The only excuse not to run linuxb before was the games. Since they've added directX 10/11 support under WINE last week there's no reason to use Windows for anything.
Noone recommends that you run virus protection under Linux. You can't get a virus under Linux unless you actually install it or allow it to run by typing in your password.
However, for my fiances laptop, I install either Norton or Mccaffee virus scanning suites. Either one of those two will work. They are the biggest, best, and approved for use by the US Government. If you are a government employee, you can get a copy for free for home.
Asside from that, I use AVG under Linux on a flash drive to scan and remove viruses from windows computers. I use it because it's portable and runs well on Linux. It's very easy to install and small as well. I can just plug in my flash drive to the computer, boot from it and load up the virus scanner while doing other tasks.
I don't run virus protection on my Desktop, Netbook or Media Center because I run Linux.

I don't have any anti-virus software. I just don't visit questionable sites. NEVER had a virus. I do run Malwarebytes once a week though.
