Default Need Help from the Resident Geeks with Laptop decision

Hey guys My last laptop died and it was prob time to upgrade anyway.

Need help choosing a laptop or at least help identifying what to look for.

I'm looking to spend under 500$ and although it sounds silly what I'm looking for is a system thats nearly instant at day to day activities.

I want it to start quickly, run smoothly on the internet, internet browser especially seems to slow my computer to the point where it will hang for a few seconds.

The same thing happens when opening programs or it will stutter and freeze while playing any sort of hd video.

I dont need lots of storage I dont run processor intensive games and applications. I just want to get on the internet, run as many windows as I want play HD videos and not have the computer slow down. I want the general interface to be quick.

I've defragged registry cleaned and virus/adware scanned old computers.. and I guess webpages and video just seem to be getting more intensive.

Been searching this website

http://www.techbargains.com/?r=1&r1=1

Seems like I can get an I5 processor (with about 6gigs ram prob overkill), way more than enough HD than I'd ever need, but cant find anything with a HD other than 5400rpm SATA (slow and prob part of my issue, I'd like to swap it for a SSD but wont the SATA connection diminish the benefits SSD?)

And who knows what video card these things have.

I dont mind screen size either but rather have 14 or 15 due to it feeling like the right size and not sucking battery power.

The Dell Inspiron 15R is pretty typical of all the computers in this range. Asus also makes a laptop with almost the exact same specs.

Bonuses would be reasonable dimensions/weight (hopefully no bricks) and good battery life realistic 2.5 hours +

They have a good deal on this site today... good for 6 hours. http://1saleaday.com/

I generally do my shopping on pricewatch.com.

You will get a much better bang for buck ratio on a desktop.

2.5 hours is a very short battery life. If all you need is that, consider a desktop and a cheap netbook. My netbook is horrible at games and what not, but it runs for 7 hours on battery, surfs the net, plays video, and does word processing. I paid $300 for my netbook 2 years ago and I see no reason to upgrade. The same one can be obtained for $150 now. Every few years I upgrade my desktop motherboard, processor and memory to the latest greatest hardware for $400.
