Default Homeland Security seizes domain names

The investigative arm of the Homeland Security Department appears to be shutting d own websites that facilitate copyright infringement.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has seized dozens of domain names over the past few days, according to TorrentFreak.

ICE appears to be targeting sites that help Internet users download copyrighted music, as well as sites that sell bootleg goods, such as fake designer handbags.

The sites are replaced with a note from the government: "This domain named has been seized by ICE, Homeland Security Investigations."

For instance, 2009jersey.com, 51607.com, and amoyhy.com have each been seized.

4chan could probably be shut down and argued it's for cyber terrorism.

some of those appear to be more knock-off merchandise domains than torrents

The intent of the department of homeland security is to protect from terrorism. Now they are using their new-found authority to enforce copyright protection? This is just wrong. Copyrights are a civil matter, not a federal matter. They have no business medeling in the afairs of private websites. The internet is about freedom of speech and it is to be uncensored. Once any bit of data hits the internet it should be considered public domain regardless of it being a trade secret of a company, or a piece of cultural information like music or video.

There is no security on the internet. You can't just say I'm going to shut down sites which link to copyrighted information. You'd shut down the entire internet. This is no buisness for the Immegrations and Customs Enforcement agency. I don't think they understand what they are getting into.
