End of the day the pc has come to a standstill with no new advancement since multi core processors, just tweaking current technology. Before you could measure performance by gigahertz now it's mere hertz. Software makers have gone to bed with chip manufactures to keep this farce going and force the "need " to upgrade. Considering most smartphones are more powerful most peoples desktop pc's.
I'm going to have to disagree with you there, buddy! My previous workstation had 8 Xeon cores at 3GHz and the current one has 12 hyperthreading cores at 2.93GHz. The current box is dramatically faster than the old, which in its turn was a huge step up from 2 cores/4 threads of the previous box. The newer computer can do things that made the old one choke, without even seeming to slow down. The only thing I've done with this box that makes it start to chug even a little is rendering video with all 24 threads maxed out and even THEN it's still more responsive than the computer I had a few computers ago.
But I will agree that an Alienware gaming PC will probably be decent as an entry-level workstation.

Those look great but are asking for trouble if they're all bare like that IMO. All it takes is one random conductive thing flying through the air (paper clip, staple, pen, metal shavings, whatever) and you've shorted your board!
