You have to spend 2x-5x the price of an equal desktop to get good mobile hardware. 600 is a good price for a hunk of junk desktop-replacement laptop, or a reliable netbook.



For a laptop you need to spend $1000ish or more. You will find that you really get what you pay for



Like I said before though, go cheap and upgrade more often with mobile computers, or go expensive with non-mobile hardware.

My wife's Sony VAIO laptop has been pretty great, but it was around $3k. I don't even remember when we bought it, must have been around 2006. It's still going strong but now with a fresh Ubuntu install to keep the speeds comparable to a modern laptop running Windows.
