Cell phone insurance
I'm looking at the Droid X, and considering buying the phone insurance, which insures against loss or breaking the phone. Im only looking at getting it because the X is really expensive out of pocket if you dont get a big discount from upgrading (which is what I'll be doing)
Ive never gotten insurance before and have always been lucky with my phone not breaking. Dont know if I should take the chance with a phone thats this expensive though, since all my other phones were just cheap flip style and not smart phones. How many of you have the extra insurance coverage on yours, and have you ever had to use it or do you have it just for peace of mind?

It is a personal choice, and the decision should be heavily influenced by your choice of case. I have no cellular phone insurance on my iPhone with a otterbox case. I will not pay for it, becasue my phone is safe. I will switch to an android based phone when my contract is up and I will probly buy a very secure case and disregard insurance.

I'd say just just because it's so new there really isn't much of a used market yet. My G1 is expensive, but I can buy them used for about what the deductible would run me.

I would pay for about 6 months, then drop it if possible.
Read the fine print. There's a deductible which is almost half the phone's new price! I looked into it with my G1 and thought what an F-ing scam. The deductible cost more than the sale price I got the phone for.
When my G1 got wet and crashed, I shopped on Craigslist and found one for $120 used in great condition.
You may not find that new phone that cheap for the first few months it's out. That's why I say the insurance is good for that long. But afterwards, drop it.

I just got hte Android Evo, and I'm paying insurance. I'll cut it off after a few months, because there's "$100 deductible" you have to pay, then they ship your phone off for a replacement. Forget that. Paying $7/mo. for 2 years = $168... plus the $100 deductible if you ever decide to use your "insurance" --- I'm sure in a few months you'll easily be able to find an Evo (or Droid X) on eBay or Craigslist for under $250.
Edit: nevermind. I didn't read the thread. Just read JonGTR's post.

I never get insurance on the phone, and almost always end up breaking the phone before my contract is up and buying a phone outright off of ebay or wherever. I think I've still come out ahead every time.

Just to clarify, the otterbox case costs $50, is water resistant, and I would feel safe dropping my phone off a 2 story building or stepping on it. No insurance is required.
