This might turn into a philosophical and theoretical debate... For quite some time I've been fascinated by the idea of 'true Artificial Intelligence'(A.I).
First of all there's a huge difference between current A.I and true A.I that I'm talking about. Numerous devices and software run some sort of A.I for example video games, GPS systems, search engines, automated machines at factories etc... but these are all limit. True A.I is about cognitive thought, where the 'machine' can take various decisions depending on the circumstances and is also capable of self learning and broadening it's knowledge. It can communicate and think pretty much like you and the more it gets 'old' the smarter it is.
Well... thing is that a lot of scientists believe that creating a true A.I is not even possible. They believe that we will advance current A.I's but there's a limit to how far we can go. Others say that it's possible but they're not sure whether it's ethical to create one. It would mean a creation of a new life form. A synthetic life. I mean we are an organic life form but that doesn't mean that just because it is synthetic it cannot be regarded as some sort of life. It might have all the needs we do like... feed, learn, communicate, perserverance and possibly reproduce itself. Besides keep in mind that even our brain works with electrical pulses and signals, neurons are connected to each other like wires and are constantly sending signals in between. Even our memory works in a way similar to a computer, it is divided in units/partitions and information is encoded in there except it is not '1' and '0'. Also there's a lot of research going on about how we can connect our brains to a computer and maybe even in the future to store our consciousness in order to re-download it later (prolonged life anyone?) Still we don't know much about our brain, we only recently decoded DNA and only now are starting manipulating individual genes. So yes, as soon as we understand our brain better the more chances we have of creating true A.I.
However some people fear that IF true A.I is achieved, we do not know the consequences, it might lead to a disaster or even an annihilation of human species. Can you predict how this A.I will react? Are you sure it won't look at us as inferior/limited beings? Of course there are others that believe that we can still co exist peacefully.
So yeah... share your thoughts and opinions please.
Do you think true A.I is possible?
Do you believe we should go for it?

It depends on how you view AI. Programs that make decisions? We're there dude. Computers that you can hold conversations with? We're there dude. Computers that write their own code? We're there dude. You want skynet? Why the hell would you hook up military grade equipment to a decision making computer? It would be totally irresponsible to hook up military equipment or give actual emotions to these computer based on textual input. Why would we simulate that?
Our human brains require emotions as part of our cognitive learning and associative process. Love, happiness, hate, fear.. They serve as the basis of thought and ground memories in our brains. Those with stronger emotions tend to be able to remember more, but only about things they get emotional about.
A computer remembers everything immediately. Ask yourself how hot it was yesterday... You will say "it was hot". Google will give you the by-the-hour report. The inputs are all there, the outputs are all there, the cognitive processes are all there and open source software runs most of it.. As open source evolves, computers will continue to get smarter and do more things based on the work of those in the past.
