Chilis installs tablets, reduces need for waiters
I think it would be difficult to find a job paying only the minimum wage. My sister in law is in college, starting a job at Victoria Secret and making $8.50/hr. That's not a wage to live off of, but she doesn't intend to. She'll work there at night or on the weekend while she's going to college. Hell, even fast food restaurants are making more than that in my area.
Servers are obviously exempt from the minimum wage laws, but this same sister in law is also working at Sonic as a car-hop. She's trying to work both jobs to make extra money in the summer, but taking food out to vehicles for $2.13/hr gets her 50% more money on average than what she would make working at Victoria Secret, a store that makes her dress up, wear makeup, and be professional and presentable. She averages $13-15/hr carrying food to cars.
Oh, yeah. She's also working an unpaid internship at the Entrepreneurial Center of Nashville as well as a campus tour guide for prospective students. She's 18 years old. What's the rest of the country's excuse?

A friend of mine just started working at Red Lobster as a server part time to bring in some extra weekly cash. He only works Tues nights, Fri nights, and Sunday afternoons. He's pulling in between $125-150 per shift, and on average, he works 4-5 hours. So if you look at it....
16-20 hours
$375-450
$22-23/hour roughly, not including the small time pay they make too.
Not too bad. He said it's mindless work. As long as you are able to cater to your tables and make sure food is perfect before it goes out, then his customers are happy and they tip well.

In college, I worked at a high-end Seafood Buffet ($35 per person). I'd work 5-6 hours (5p-10/11p) and if I cleared under $150 it was a bad night. Getting $200-250 was a good night and hitting $300 was epic, but doable. Oh, and free food and a couple drinks at the end of the night went a long way
Making $35/hr was pretty damn awesome for a college kid 10 years ago. Hell, that's good f*cking money now. If the restaurant was open for more than just dinner I could have made a career out of it.

Maybe its just my luck but every time I eat out, something about my order is messed up. Im probably the minority here but I approve of the tablets because that means I get my food exactly how I want it based off how I order it. I dont have to rely on a server messing things up when they enter it in their systems.
These tablets don't actually ensure that by any means. Just because your order is put into the system correctly (via tablet or server) doesn't mean the cook(s) will prepare it correctly. Especially when it is busy, cooks overlook things quite often, especially when they make the same things all of the time and they start to become habit. Though, the tablet could give the servers more time to make sure that the food is prepared the way you ordered it before just assuming it is and running it out to you because they are "busy."
