Just out of curiousity, but couldn't you file a formal complaint with paypal seeing how they gave him back his money without returning the item? Did the buyer contact you prior to contacting paypal?
Yes the item is no longer working, but does he have an invoice for where he took it to be installed? Your auction did state you're not liable for false installation.

you're just a number. same deal with the government. you think your car is your property? think twice. make one late payment and they take your tags away. not to mention repo men. it's all the government.
i know this may spound pessemistic, but know your seller too. i will not sell something to someone i don't really know that well.
man... paypal sucks when it comes down to it, but who's to believe you. it's pretty much his word vs. yours.
