I know how you feel; Im an Industrial Design student and I have collaborated with the Architecture and Interior Design faculties on several projcts to date. You just need to go with what you feel sometimes and say "f*ck it, this is my design."
The opinion of the lecturer is an indicator, a very good one, but still just an indicator. If you're in the business to follow the herd, and not to bomb fresh pastures flat with brilliant new ideas and concepts, then seriously the future of the constructed environment is in dire straits. It's up to you bro, but what it comes down to is if you can justify the design and smoothly integrate it, then why not? Remember the Great Exhibition and how they built stuff, remember the arches? You might want to get some data from the appropriate authorities, having hard facts with credentials behind them, that cannot be argued with.
Sometimes, the lecturer is gonna test you, and test you hard, but in the end youre gonna need to think about the integrity of the concept, is it gonna be fresh and new, or just moulded around what someone else wants? Remember, in the constructed environment, once in a while you'll need to provoke, this may be one of those times bro.

This is exactly why I disagree with school in general.
There is too much emphasis on "We do things this way because that's the way we've always done it" rather than encouragement to explore and find new and better ways.
I am 100% confident there will never be another great mind coming from a formal education. If you only focus on what others did to get where we are now, rather than being encouraged to think freely and progessively, progress will never be made.
