I'm just tired of the car repair shops around here. they treat people like they know nothing about their own car. damnit.gif Ok, lets see where I start....
this is shop #1
My Mercedes have a CEL well I drive to Autozone and ask the guy at the counter i he can scan my car. he ask me the make and year, i tell him a MB C220 '95. he says that he cant scan my car because its a 95 and that year they (cars) didn't came OBD II, i try to explain that Mercedes Benz ARE OBD II from 94 to present. he says that im wrong but says it in a voice tone that you know he is mad. i notice his attitude and quit trying to make him get my point of view. im like: "ok. what ever dude, you're the shizzle here" lmao.gif
shop #2-3
i go to 2 body shops to see how much it was to roll my front fenders on my Mercedes. to my surprise none of them knows what is a fender rolling tool ( if you don't know either click here. the first didn't wanted to give me a price unless i was sure he was gonna do the job. thumbsdown.gif if you want to know why i didn't let him do it.... he quoted me 3 grand to paint the car and the car still shines like new lol. i don't want to know how much is going to be if the car is all beated.
the other shop the guy wanted to charge me $300 per side, because he had to cut the fender and fabricate haha.gif i thought i asked for roll my fenders not to make a wide body kit. LOL
shop # 4
I go to Tuffy Mufflers to see if i could get the exhaust of the Tiburon done under the axle. the guy says that he can't do that because he could get in trouble with his boss and that kind of mod is not OBD and DOT compliant..... when he said that i just started to cry laughing haha.gif isnt taking the cat out that is illegal? lmao i was kinda pissed because he gave me some lame excuse first but when he told me that i just turned around and left. rofl3.gif he could just told me that he didnt wanted to do it. hahaha. where the f*** that guy got that is illegal to have your exhaust under axle. I think its funny how people put thing so damn hard to do, when its not. lame lame.gif shit, if i had the money i would open a badass shop here. but, im poor dang it!!! owned.gif

Yeah, car repair places and people are mostly stupid. There are a few good shops in Buffalo, NY where people who are actually around cars and actually care work, but most are few and far between.
And about Autozone, they are frickin' clueless. Knowing who works at the local Autozone, I would never get parts there. It's sad how people who work at car-parts places are clueless, and they never hire anybody who knows anything about cars. Almost like they pre-screen out anybody with half a clue about cars when hiring.

^^ That's how I feel about computer sales guys at Futureshop.
Scoupe, do your research and then when you go in, just tell them exactly what you want done, how you want it done, and ask for a price. Then they can't really give you a run around about how they do it. they know up front that you know what you're talking about. They can still screw you on the price though. 02.gif

hey sciphi, how bout you kiss my ass? I work there and I am willing to bet I can run circles around you with knowledge of cars. There are a select few cars that you can scan in 95 and unless the person knows what OBD II is, there's no reson for us to check... That was bad that the guy got all pissed at him and wouldn't scan it, but most of our management is ASE cert... So just don't talk to the people wearing red shirts. And what do you do, work at McDonalds?
Back OT... That sucks about your predicament though man. Call AutoZone and ask for a number for a district manager, and report thestore.

They read from a book. If the book says so, then it's right. Anyone can be hired at autozone. It does not take a mechanic or a REDZMAN to work there.

that's more of a custom tire store thing, or a custom shop where they do lowriders and the such. Bigger body shops tend to stick to procedural things. They won't mess with custom stuff because they're more concerned with filling the ranks with people and those who DO know how to work outside the lines are in charge of correcting issues.

There are laws that say shops cannot modify exhaust outside specs. If you ask them to do something as simple as weld bung on your pipe, most larger places will turn you down. Again, you have to go to smaller custom shops who are "cooler". The larger shops have a box from which they're allowed to operate. The main reason for the rules is the larger shops don't want repeat customers. If they do custom work they take liability for the work. If they make it like the manufacturer says, there can be fewer problems such as things breaking because there's too much stress in an area the manufacturer intended no stress to be placed.
It all boils down to you know more about your car then they do. You might not have the experience needed to perform the modifications, but you have the knowledge. Most of the people who work at automobile shops had the same experience that you do at one point. They are now doing a job that constrains their abilities but enhances their experience. Noone will take better care of your car then you will.

Not exactly sir, they are allowed to modify exhaust systems to fit the customer's needs as long as it doesn't remove anything emission wise that is stated by the local governments. They are allowed to make under-axle exhaust, and also larger diameter exhaust systems. But, usually when they do anything "custom" they usually have it in writing that they will not be held responsible for anything. It all depends where you live.
I had my 3" downpipe and 3" exhaust made by a place down here in VA with no problems for my 94 Eclipse gsx. and it is legal.

hey man, you need to calm down a bit. Autozone is a parts supplier, not mechanics. Sometimes, there are people hired to just fill a spot and they absolutely nothing and then there are times where experienced people apply for the position to just make a bit more money.
Now, i am ASE certified in alot of areas and have my state inspector license for the state of Virginia and i would in no way try to tell you that i know more than you about cars.
Also, doesn't autozone carry the scanners to read the OBD-1 systems also? i know Advanced Auto use to carry them.

I hear ya. Everyone here is stupid as hell. That or they just don't wanna do stuff for me 02.gif I went to get new tires put on, and the guy said their machine can't do low pro tires. Really? It's the exact same machine as everywhere else, and they've even worked with low pro's that belonged to me before. Wtf. Get stupid stuff like that no matter where I go here.
