well, since i bought the car it's either i'm always having problems with it or i'm not. the longest i've went with out having to fix anything was a month! i still have to replace the front brakes and do a wheel alignment. maybe even have to replace the sway bar links and lower control arms. my buddy that has a 99 A4 1.8T is having a lot of problems with his too. we're both thinking about getting rid of them and get new cars.
i mean it's a nice car when it's not breaking down but when one thing goes wrong you can feel it on the car. the abs and awd system doesn't work good and feels very unstable. but from what i'm told if you get a 01+ they have less problems but if i'm going to spend that much money i'd rather go get a Lexus.

that's why my german car was built in the mid 90s and features very little electronics compared to the other cars built on it's chassis. Germans LOVE to put electronic gizmos in their car.. and when they break, it gets expensive.
They also tend to not like to do warrenty repairs.. usually saying the breakage is "not their fault" and that the owner is SOL and needs to get it repaired themselves. BMW is famous for this with thier rear subframes pulling out of the higher performance (but not the M series) cars..
Unfortunately, I have heard very little good out of VAG except for their diesel powered cars

i got a 98 A6 Quattro 2.8 and my buddy has a 99 A4 Quattro 1.8T. the warranty work they did was only because the warranty was under a different dealer cause the 98's had a policy that every time they are sold by a dealer it has to have a 2 yr warranty or something like that. not to mention that they have a inner ($60+) and outter ($40+) tie rod that screw into each other, front lower and rear lower control arms ($100+ each arm), front upper and rear upper control arms ($100+ each arm); and when one goes out you're recommended to change them all cause not shortly after the other ones will go out, or that's what the guys on the audiforums say.
