suspension woes -- attn: 2000 Low &Show
If you read FX, you might have seen my post in the 911 area. Upon hitting bumps, dips, and speed-bumps, the rear right of the car makes an awful "grrrrruuunnntt" sound. I originally thought this was the brakes, but determinted it not to be so. It is also not the exhaust. that leaves the suspension components.
I jacked the car up and down, trying to isolate where the sound was coming from. Unfortunately, it is loud enough (and vibrates all the members) so that it is not easy to localize. I wd-40'd (and used some synthetic thing by Penzoil --a spray) to lube everything. I mean every following arm, support arm, the springs, etc. It didn't help, in fact it may be louder now.
I'm pretty sure it is the strut or spring, because, the other parts don't move as much (they rotate a little, but don't go up and down much), and the noise is only when the suspension has to travel far (as in a speed bump or when the car is almost jacked up off the ground).
This is the wheel closest to the battery relo, so I'm wondering if the extra weight was enough to accelerate any decay to the struts and springs.
Anyone have any thoughts as to what would be causing this? Anything to test and make sure? I'm considering completely disassembling the suspension back there and testing every piece, but that may be extreem.
Also, if I do need to replace stuff, what's everyone's opinion on the Eiback prodamper and lowering springs? Tirerack has them for $775 total.
Thanks in advance,
ac

HEY
Your noise comes from the parking brake cables.I am definately sure about that...
I had exactly the same problem.
So do this:
1)Firstly adjust the cables to be tight
2)Take a plastic tape and cover the cables(in order to be thick)especially at the position where they make a turn(under the chassis)and end up to the rear discbrakes.

Curtas..yeah..I was gona mention the same thing that Turboman stated. It's either your emergency brake, or as what you think..the strut. I don't think it would be the spring, because you would more or less hear a loud squeek if the spring had issues. So, I'm willing to bet that it could be the strut. If your car is still under warranty, have the dealer take a look at it.
As far as the Eibach Pro Damper kit goes....it's one of the best suspension spring systems on the market. Not that low of a drop, but your handling and ride quality will be amazing! Good luck! wink.gif

Thanks for the help guys. I need a bit of elaboration, though:
how should I check the brake cable? I looked under there this morning and the cable comes out of the drum runs up one of the members, then turns to go into the body. None of these points seemed even close to rubbing against something. What exactly should I be looking for? When jacking the car up and down, the noise occurs whether the parking brake is set or off.
Also this morning, I was pretty sure the sound was coming from higher up that underneath (this can be misleading, becaue the wheel well echoes the sounds).
Anyway, Turboman or 2000Low, if you could clarify what exaclty I'm checking on the parking cable, I'll give it another look.
Thanks for the help guys.
