So I'm changing the rear rotors and brake pads on my girlfriend's 01 Tiburon. Her dad (who lives out of town) got the rotors and brake pads. damnit.gif Unfortunately, the pads didn't come with the inner and out shims. The old ones are pretty ugly - they're rusted and splitting a bit, but still have their shape.

Tried to source the shims but I can't get them anywhere, not even at the dealer. Seems that the shims come as part of the pads. One auto parts store told me that the shims aren't even necessary, just to use disk brake quiet on the back of the pads.

Could I get some insight.... are the shims necessary? Would I be alright without or just using the old ones?

I have not run shims now for almost 4 years. no issues at all.

 

My rears never had the shims. I am not sure if it was because of the person who owned it before me, or if the fronts are the only ones that come with shims.

Actually, none of my rear brake pads came with shims. I have had no problems.


On a side note, make sure you lube your slide bolts when you have them appart.

 

No the shims on the pads are not a necessity. They are just their for brake squeal reduction.
On that note, useing some antisqueal compound wouldn't be a bad idea (not absolutely necessary either though)

 

Having had to replace a caliper mount.. You definatly want to lube the slide bolts.

 

shims are there to stop pads shaking - that makes noises. They are usually in the packege of OEM brake pads. Don't worry if you don't have them. Try cleaning yours and reuse them.

 

i was getting vibration and squeling after forgetting to put the shims on while changing brake pads. since then ive always remembered to do so.

 

Just wanted to say Thanks to everyone who responded. Got 'er done and the brakes are mint. I tried to re-use the old shims but they were in too poor a condition. Went with some anti-squeal compound on the back of the pads and, so far, all's good.

Thanks for the reminder of lubing the slider pins... they were in need.
