So I replaced my rear pads this weekend on my '01 Tib. They have been grinding and squealing something awful for a month or so. Bought the pads and the little cube to turn the piston back into the caliper and went to work. When taking off the old pads I noticed that they were exactly the same size as the news ones...like brand new which is weird cause man it was sounding like sparks were flying out when I would take a off-ramp or something similar. Anyhow...turned the pistons in, put in new pads, used cleaner, greased all necessary contact points, reinstalled, and double-checked E-brake cables. Everything worked great...no sound at all...a couple of days later I get out and the waft of hot-clutch smell slaps me in the face. After checking everything out...I walk around and touch each rim...and BAM...rear left rim was like touching a stove burner. Another day went by and its just making a really high pitched squeak at 30 mph or so.

So basically Im just wondering...is there some trick with the pistons as far as how far I was supposed to screw them in? Do I adjust them somehow? Cause I basically just put the cube on and turned them until they fit over the rotor. Never really worked on calipers like this before.

Thanks in advance. hail.gif

sounds like e-brake is stuck. jack up the car and see if the wheel will turn. Then check that lever on the caliper to see if it's pulled. Mine was doing that, now the cable just broke.

ssaaammme sh*t is happening to me just yesterday. it sounds like i'm dragging a shovel. rear right disc is also corroded and the pad is new and it's not even touching the surface of the rotor!! WTF coincidence!

i'm thinking it's the handbrake. is your handbrake messed up like mine? i think it's the cable. and the rotor is so corroded it's scraping something.

thankfully when my cable went bad, it was not engaging the brake at all. It is just made of poor materials and tends to corrode and snap right where it leaves the housing by the brake.

i went to a tech to ask for advice. it's some kind of pin that's loose holding the brake together. i'm having it fixed tomorrow so i'll let you know for sure.

bump, yep buddy, i had to get my entire caliper and rotor and pads replaced. i drove on the sh*t too long. are there any metal flakes on the rim? if so, you have a problem.

so some pin on my brake was loose and the caliper bent, biting into the rotor everytime i drove. wow, i didn't think it was that big a problem that the caliper had to be replaced. mangled my cross drilled rotor so now one of my rotors is stick while the others are cross drilled...

ah well, anytime you hear a squeeking noise, do not ignore it!!

i have a similar problem, but i'm not sure which side it's coming from.

just recently changed the brake pads, and screeching noise is still audible when i step on the brakes slightly.
the noise isn't audible when i brake harder.

is this the caliper problem too? or could it be something else easier to fix?
