Well, at the request of others, I would like to post this mod.

it is by far the best bang for the buck brake upgrade you can do... I know that I have an XD but the stock disks and pads should be the same as on my RD... you will end up with GK v6 calipers and 11 inch rotors from the 2004 sonata with ABS... it is a direct bolt-on swap with only slight bending of the rear dust cover... (I chose to cut it clean off with a pair of metal shears, but its up to you)...

now, on to the mod..

parts:

2003 gt v6 tiburon calipers (left and right have diff part #'s).
2004 Sonata front disk brakes (abs model).
2003 gt v6 tiburon brake pads.
2003 gt v6 crush washers for the calipers (you will need 4 of them, 2 on each side).

besides that, you'll need a bunch of tools and a jack... i suggest you buy a d/c powered impact wrench to remove the lug nuts and other misc parts like the calipers and such.... but if you want to do it the hard way... be my guest...

pics:
this is the stock disk on top of the sonata disk.. you can see that the sonata disk is much bigger !

This is a wide shot of the install...

and this is what it looks like after its done, of course, the silver paint will go away after a few miles of driving...

i'm using gt v6 tiburon calipers... but the 2004 sonata with abs rotors are the same size as the tib rotors but they are 4 lug pattern that directly bolt onto the j1, j2, rd, xd1, xd2, and even the accent knuckles ! smile.gif hehehe

just be sure to have at least 15 inch rims to clear them.

Not bad.

This isn't getting moved to the DIY section, to much stuff missing.

The brake pad cleaning paint though, now THAT is not a good idea. Good way to start trouble and ruin your pads. That idea was talked about on HA.com quite some time ago and very ridiculed.

What I'd like to know is...

1. Tools needed. I've never touched my Tibby Brakes.

2. Part #'s.

3. Prices.

4. Does this FOR SURE fit the RD's?

5. Question answered...

All in all though, I'd love to see someone here do this. It'd be GREAT to have a CHEAP option for the brakes.

6. Any changes in braking after install? I mean do you have to hit it harder or anything with the new calipers?

7. Just fronts or will this work for the rears?

I'm very interested in doing this. sounds like a pretty cool idea, especially since you can get green stuff pads for front and back then (I remember hanguk ran into that problem). My main question is how big is the difference? I figure with a upgrade from single piston to dual (that is right correct?) and up to abs (thought you needed a computer system for that?) the difference would be pretty sweet. laugh.gif

edit: 2004 Sonata front disk brakes (abs model). <-- did you mean to say rotors? and abs would be a funtion of the calipers, not the rotors :?:

Ahh, you caught yourself Cow.

LOL

It's just the ABS disks, nothing else. They are just the ones that fit, that's all.

ah i read his discription wrong,

I read it to mean the tib would have abs, which i was seriously doubting, yet still possible.

but anyways, I'm still confused, did he mean 4 sonata rotors and 4 gk tib calipers? in his parts list he said sonata front disk brakes

sounds like a cool idea though, just need to find a set of each in the junkyard.... laugh.gif
