Default Think twice about that used Ferrari

  • Ferrari has acknowledged it knew dealers were using a device that allowed technicians to tamper with odometers of vehicles, according to a memo filed a Florida court this month
  • Bud Root, a former showroom salesman, filed legal papers last year, claiming he was fired after discovering and asking about the device called the 'Deis Tester'
  • The practice - which could allegedly only occur if Ferrari headquarters green-lights it - allowed owners to sell Ferraris to buyers at inflated prices
  • Tampering with a car's odometer is illegal in several states. In Florida, it can lead to a felony conviction
  • After news of the discovery broke, Ferrari sent out the memo on March 2, 2017, and called for dealers to stop using the 'Deis Tester'
  • It was revealed this month in court papers related to Root's lawsuit
  • The memo reads: 'Ferrari SpA will release a software update for the DEIS tester that includes removing this cycle
  • 'As a result, the odometer 'reset to zero' functionality is being removed'
