Mitt Romney may have labled electric carmaker Tesla Motors a “loser” during the first U.S. presidential debate, but it certainly is a winner in this instance.
Automobile Magazine put the speed of the Tesla Model S to the test, pitting it against the BMW M5 in a drag race.
While it may appear that the Tesla’s driver put his pedal to the metal a moment earlier than his competitor did, the BMW quickly fell behind and was unable to catch up.
So much for the old belief that electric cars are not very fast.

443 lb-ft of torque at 0RPM? Sounds like it should be 0 lb-ft until it starts rotating...
I'm not, by any means, saying the Tesla isn't impressive / pretty / cool, but come on...

wouldn't really say that it destroyed the BMW.. Looked like hardly a couple car lengths and of course no side-by-side shot at the end.. On top of the fact it looked like the Tesla jumped the gun, they would be pretty neck and neck, it seems.
Looks like they are priced pretty much the same but I would have some doubts that the Tesla would feel anything like a refined BMW M series.. If you had the kind of money for an M5, you probably aren't worried about paying for gas anyway..

416hp single speed electric... meaning instant power
vs.
560HP twin Turbo (traditional) V8 with 7 gears to navigate
Seems fair at first until you realize that the power curve on the Tesla is a flat line and comes on almost instantly with little to no interrupt, while the BMW has the typical ICC build with turbo lag and 6 different shift points, each of which build and apex before the next shift.
Still pretty cool.
Still not buying an electric (though I did test and like the leaf.)

the only purpose I would ever have for an electric car in my opinion would be for a second commuter car, just to get me back and forth to work every day. I'd be looking for something like the LEAF or that mitsu thing with a lower price tag.

With the Nissan Leaf being produced here in Nashville, and Nissan HQ here as well, we see quite a few Leaf vehicle on the road. They aren't that bad looking, and we have charging stations set up at most major malls.
