The on-sale date for the all-new '06 Hyundai Sonata has been pushed back from April to May.

A Hyundai dealership employee tells Ward's the vehicle now is expected to hit showrooms next month. Hyundai Motor America CEO Robert Cosmai told Ward's in January the redesigned sedan would go on sale in early April.

We'll get one next month, I think it will be around the middle of the month,” the employee says. He says the first new Sonata received will be for display purposes only, with volume models to begin arriving shortly thereafter.

A spokesman for Hyundai's new U.S. plant in Montgomery, AL, confirms the slight delay, telling Ward's mass commercial production has not yet begun, even though the plant has been building cars “for several months” as part of trial production.

“We haven't shipped our first cars to the dealers, which is our next milestone, and we expect to reach that over the next couple of weeks,” the spokesman says. “I don't have a date set for that, but they're doing some final adjusting to the equipment and making sure the quality is of the utmost and the best that it can be. And then we're going to start shipping cars to dealers in the next couple of weeks.”

Montgomery's official grand opening ceremony will be held May 20. Next week, Hyundai will allow the media to test drive the new Sonata for the first time.

Yeah, we found this out yesterday
Some of the guys got to go to school for the introduction. Unfortunatly I didn't get a chance to go to this one like the did for the Tucson,...
They had a prototype there, unfinished (door panels were still matte looking etc, unfinished interior, not a production model) but it ran. The guys took it for a boot and it's REALLY nice and clean!
I can't wait to see the final product on the lot soon.
Oh also if you are thinking of getting the 4 cyl 2.4 Theata auto, wait till after Aug. There will be the 5Spd Auto . Instead of the 4Spd auto they have now in the early production.
