Default Regulators want rearview cameras in new passenger vehicles

Federal regulators want rearview cameras put in all new passenger vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration plans to announce U.S. automakers will be required to put rearview cameras in all passenger vehicles by 2014.

KidsandCars.org says about two children die annually and 50 are injured weekly in accidents when someone backs over them.

Adding the cameras and viewing screens will cost the auto industry about $160 to $200 a vehicle -- that's about $2.7-billion dollars a year.

Some of that cost will likely be passed on to consumers.

So if you dont have a backup camera now, just wait a couple of years....

I just read that when looking for pictures in the other thread. Didn't read it entirely. Added cost to the vehicles, but hopefully it'll drive down the cost of components after a year. Not sure how I feel about it... but even the Kia Rio offers a package with touchscreen. Adding a simple camera should be fairly simple and not cost too much.

I love mine on the Murano, and it would make life so much easier for lowered cars - backing in to a parking space without the risk of hitting the front on a concrete block.

Two annually???? SERIOUSLY???? More kids die from people closing recliner chairs on them than being run over by overambitious drivers! $2.7 BILLION???? I think you could rescue way more than TWO kids with $2.7 BILLION.

Some of that cost All of that cost will likely be passed on to consumers.
Fixed.

With every vehicle coming with screens now, its going to make it that much harder for aftermarket head unit and radio surround companies to manufacturer something that will fit or that can be swapped in.

Reversing cameras are so bad, here's why.

People solely rely on the camera, so they rocket back into the space without checking the surrounding area, so they become a 2 ton rocketship with a 15 degree field of view.

I love how the Gov't says it'll "cost the auto industry"... The auto industry doesn't pay for anything. If it add $200 to the manufacturing cost, it'll add $400 to the retail price. Not to mention more weight, lower gas mileage, etc... 1988 Honda Civic DX sedan weighed 2039 Lbs., 2008 Honda Civic DX sedan weighed 2628 Lbs. Enough already!!!

No, HotBlue02, you cannot "just" back up. You will also be paying tax dollars to pay people to write laws, and rules to explain those laws, until it's a 1/2" thick book about why you can't turn the F around and look out the back window.

Two kids (or was it three?) got Sudafed put behind the counter. Never underestimate the amount of demagoguery you can wring out of 2 dead kids.
