My wife's Grandmother passed away a few weeks ago and we were offered her car, for free, if we want it.
It's a 1991 Ford Thunderbird, white I hear, and we'd have to get up to Kansas to pick it up. I was thinking about getting it to give to my son for his first car, or maybe using it as a trade in to get him one that he wants.
I dont' know the milage yet, but supposedly the car runs fine. The owner was 78 when she died, so obviously didn't drive it THAT much or THAT hard.
What do you guys think>?

Big engine, mediocure gas millage, Low trade value (according to edmonds). When i was 16 a car was a car. Once you had a car then you could work your way up to what you wanted.

Free is free I guess but a car of that age could turn into quite a money pit. Domestic cars of that vintage were not exactly high quality so unless it has very low mileage and was very well maintained it will likely have lots of issues before too long. Might be a good learning experience though if your son is interested in messing around with cars and is not dependant on it for a means of transportation.

Cars from elderly people are the best deal ever. Ordinarily they're pretty low mileage, and what miles they do have are very gentle. Plus, since they're usually to old to do any work themselves on it, most all the tune-ups are done at a dealer, so you shouldn't have any mechanical problems with it.
Of course, all this is generalities that I've found (my parents have bought a van and a town car from older people, and they've been immaculate with absolutely no problems), so it may differ when you actually see the car.
Sure, the car's trade in value is only $50 according to edmunds ($880 dealer retail) and it may not be the most economical or powerful car, and some may not even think it looks that great, but hey, it's free... I'd go for it.

i'd say go and get it. even if you absolutely don't like it and don't like it for your son you can always sell it or donate it for a decent tax write off

My friend bought a 93 thunderbird from a old person for real cheap. It's a good first car, rear wheel drive, very roomy, decent power (slower than a tib tho). But very bad on gas even for a v6. personally I don't like the car But for free why not.
It's hard to say how reliable the car is tho, my friend is a huge idiot (drives really drunk all the time) so he had quite a few accidents with it that caused a bunch of problems. and he doesn't take care of anythign he owns so its going to sh*t real fast lol.
