You're kidding, right? First, looking at the NSX's 1/4 mile times is like looking at the Firebird's rock crawling ability... not what it was designed for. Second, the 1991 Formula 350 with the 350ci TPI L98 made 245 HP. The '91 Formula 350 ran the 1/4 in 14.8. The '91 Ferrari 348TB ran the 1/4 in 13.8. The NSX was over a full second quicker (forever in a 1/4 mile race) than the Formula with and engine barely over 1/2 the size.

The 348 was slow anyway.

1989 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am Convertible 0–60 4.6 sec, 1/4 mile 13.4 sec

1993 Pontiac Firebird Firehawk 0-60 mph 4.8 Quarter mile 13.3

Anyway, my point is that it was expensive and used lots of high technology, but its engine simply wasn't good enough to compete with the supercars that it was aiming (and priced) for.

So, a one year only turbocharged V6 firebird and a non-production tuner built 5.7L V8 powered Firebird were as quick as a normally aspirated Honda with less displacement?

You say the NSX wasn't good enough to compete with the supercars it was designed to compete with and then call the 348, which was specifically what it was designed to compete with, slow? Admit it... you're just wrong.

Wait! Did I miss something here or are we now considering the TA and Firebird supercars? Because last I checked supercars are good in corners, not just dragged out dyno queens with half-respectable rubber.

Yes, tarted up Firebirds were outdragging it. Honda had all of the engine tech, they had a great chassis - where was the blown six? Or another liter of displacement?

And yes I am calling the 348 slow. I guess if it was designed to compete with slow cars, that's cool, but that doesn't make the Honda objectively fast.

And what cars were beating it on REAL tracks, since that's what it was designed for. The only Firebird that would have even kept an NSX in sight on a track would have to be a purpose built racecar.

I dunno, Porsches or RX7s or something. The rest of the car was fine, just the engine was wierdly half baked.

No, NSX was killing Porsche's and RX7's on the track.

ugh i cant believe im defending a honda (and yes i would purchase one if i had the opportunity) but remember wheels Lotus put a beige motor(toyota) into its elise and it does damn well for its intented use

ive driven a nsx before and man was that fun

thats a dyno of a pretty stock vehicle(shows before and after exhaust), to have and maintain pretty much all of its torque throughout the powerband is rare for a honda, me personally, id look into a supercharger for it nothing crazy just a few psi but id probably be happy with just a stock one

btw just for shits and grins with a 6psi pulley computech dyno's read like this

RPM

2000 2500 3000 3500 4000 4500 5000 5500 6000 6500 7000 7500 8000

HP

082 105 135 165 200 230 255 285 315 345 360 385 395

TORQUE

222 226 237 241 261 268 270 269 271 277 271 268 261

having 222ftlbs of torque in a sub 3000lb vehicle by 2000 rpms is pretty damn impressive
