Ok.. I was digging through my boxes 'o' crap today and found a framed pic of my friend fatty's old car.

I'm sat in it at the time, we took it to a place in London (Streatham Common) to have photos taken for a magazine.

I wont mention the name of the magazine because it will give it away....

Anyway, this is a UK only car..

Anyone know what it is? (and no cheating if youre from England as it will be obvious to you then)

Im looking make, type and model smile.gif - and, let's play carnival too.. see if you can guess the manufacturer of the rims and the HP this car had under the hood.. Ill list all the mods that were done to it later on smile.gif

It's a 1994 Ford Escort RS Turbo cabriolet.

Tuned to 320 horsepower lol.

A few details.

As stock those RS turbos were 1.8l turbocharged.

That one was blueprinted.. the engine was bored to 2l and given a complete port polish.

It then had a hybrid turbo put on from a renault 19 (much bigger turbo) and a ford fiesta RS turbo trans to allow very quick shifting.

Massive intercooler, chipped ECU, 6" thru pipes into scorpion muffler.. and so on.

Audio.

Amps - PG outlaw, PG m25.
Subs - 2 Cerwin Vega XL 18's in 14000 cu in sealed box (was the biggest we could go)

Mids - in the front 2x 5" rainbow mids in custom pods with 1 of the tweets in the pod and one in the upright for the windshield. (2 mids and a tweet per pod)
Rainbow centre channel speaker (5x4) in the dash.

Soundstream reference 5" components in the back.

Head unit - Alpine blackout.

Pre amplifier - RF in dash.

Line driver - Phoenix gold.

Active XO's - 2 audio control, one running to the small part of the outlaw and the m25 and one for the bass with a custom 28hz chip in it for the sub amp.

TV - panasonic motorised 5"

Security Clifford concept 50 with sense and tell and smartwindows/roof (roof was electric also)

Amps were wired 0awg from the battery and then into 4awg for each amp.

All dist blocks were fosgate, as were fuses and Amp cables (obsidian)

Took us about 5 months to fit and make it all lol

Oh and the rims are TSW Imola's.

They made them the same year as the hockenheim R's... both based on race circuits.

17" btw wrapped in Yokahamas.

No they were for fast ford UK and a car audio mag from the mid to late 90s by the same publisher.

The audio system didnt make print as that magazine ceased to be shortly afterwards.

In recent years the guy who built that escort Fatty's older brother Joe..it was a shell and up job) had another escort featured in fast ford.. a RS turbo shell job using a RS Cosworth motor and turbo etc... that particular one was at 450 HP on a rolling road (dyno) at time of print and later became over 500 HP.. it was then sold to a guy who had it 2 weeks (after paying 12 thousand UK pounds for it) before smashing it, totally it completely.

The actual job done on the later escort is known as a gartrac conversion, as cosworths are rear wheel drive.. the escort in the picture up there was front wheel drive and fast as a rocket ship...

I remember when fatty hit the boost my feet would lift up off the floor of the car.. and no matter how much I tensed to prepare for it it still happened.. my body would rock back in the recaros and pin me.

Frighteningly fast car.

It met a grizzly end one night when we were out cruising and the police stopped him and demanded he pop the hood.. the one thing he hadnt gotten around to was split pins..

So they didnt close the hood down properly and when boosting up to 110 on the way home the hood flew up.. ripping the hinges straight through the valance, smashing the windshield and twisting the window pillars, totalling the car.

It also had massive drilled discs and uprated calipers, as well as Koni adjustable shocks.. the whole inside of the doors and metalwork were sprayed with a wax to prevent corrosion and the whole car color coded in white.. clear lenses.. as the saying goes "leave no rock unturned"

Sorry if Im rattling on.. I just miss my UK cars..

Here is the Gartrac escort I was going on about.. it wasnt hard to find it on the net as its one of the UK fastest ford escorts.

And this, which is in no way stock and takes serious knowledge to pull off.. the cosworth conversion.. (car is not only crammed with all that engine but converted to rear wheel drive)

And what happens when you buy one and cant handle the power..

OUCHO !

it's funny you bring up the cosworth escort (so I was dead wrong before) I have a set of bonnet (hood) vents from the previous generation sitting in storage waiting to go on my tib once I get a carbonfibre hood.

The front drive to rear drive is an interesting idea.. I may have to ponder that some.
