A friend of my dads has a 2001 accent that he is trying to get inspected. Here in NY if your car was made after '97 you have to pass the visual inspection and plug a computer into your OBDII port. If you have any check engine lights or if the there are 2 or more monitors not set you fail.
My dad is the mechanic doing the inspection and when it didn't pass the first time because the monitors weren't set he gave him a 1 time 10 day extension(per state law). Now the guy has driven at least 600 miles and 2 of monitors still aren't set, there is no check engine light on, well probably because the monitors aren't set.
Does anyone know what could be causing this problem besides the computer and if needed can he use a computer from my 2001 tib to just pass inspection? I have my old 2.0 ECU.

I doubt you can use the tiburon ECU, that's an alpha engine on the accent, and it's much smaller than 2.0.
Maybe there is something that is causing the ECU to reset? Like maybe a loose power/ground wire?

Yeah I doubt that I could use my other computer too but I was just curious.
hmm, that power/loose ground is a good idea. Have to tell him to looking to that, but Im pretty sure its the same monitors not being set so that wouldn't really link back to a reset issue.

I know for sure that the beta1 ecu WILL fit the 97 accent. in fact, thats a very common upgrade for the x3 accents in Puerto Rico. BUT it'll probably throw a CEL.

well your car has to go through 3 drive cycles to run through all the monitors, if your just making short trips that could be the problem, but ill ask my instructor tomorrow and see what he says

It's 2 drive cycles. The monitors are set after 2 drive cycles. Once the monitors are set, the o2 sensors have been fully monitored by the ECU and it will give error codes of what needs to be fixed. The drive cycles for our cars are listed on hmaservice.com
