Remember when the Probe was supposed to replace the Mustang? That went well.
It wasn't that the Probe didn't go well, it's that the ZX3 didn't go well. The Aspire wasn't helping either. In addition, it didn't have the 20-year reputation of the Celica and the Tiburon and the rest were nibbling away ZX3 sales.

I thought, and still think that the latest Probe wasn't bad looking for its time (1993). Infact, pretty sporty for its time. Pop up lights. Big hatch. Nice clean design.

But, not like a Mustang. And nobody cross shopped the two really. The original plan was to replace the Mustang altogether with the Probe, but that was scrapped because like it or not, a FWD turbo 4 or V6 car doesn't attract the people looking for a Mustang.

I've always hated ALL of the retro-sh*t. I'd buy that car with a 5.0L V8 with 450HP, rwd and a 6 speed stick. I bought my '08 Mustang despite it's looks, not because of them.

Let me point out that in all of history, aesthetic has never once been a bad thing. But now because of technological advances, it has become a bad thing. Technology has replaced aesthetic.

Sure, old dusty things like Mark Twain Novels or Shakespeare Sonnets are hard to understand and outdated, but they will always be remembered and studied at the highest level and therefore will always rank above these new, lifeless materials, to noble eyes.

Oh come on guys, american cars have been resting on their mediocre, not-even-laurels for decades now. It's thoroughly refreshing to see that the new mustang, supra and GTR have all innovated and created new, cheap sports cars that are relevant. As opposed to throwing the same formula and rehashed styling onto the same chassis, upping the roll stiffness by 10%, and waiting for the sales.

Except for rare cases, sales don't come from enthusiasts of the previous model.

First of all, I hate stangs.

That said, the mustang needs to be an iconic, (sort of) unique piece of modern automobilia. This abomination is anything but. As a retarded double standard as anything BUT a mustang I would totally adore the styling. Another FR hatch, especially and big, inefficient monster V8 is a welcomed, especially if they can cut the chassis weight by half a ton or better (V8 GT500 coupe MT - 3,940 lb) and upgrade the suspension to something made within the last couple of decades. I mean, it's 2012 people, a live rear axle? Really? Really!? Styling-wise I expect a big, boxy, menacing, snorting beast made of metal; not a euro-hatch. Beginning of the end for the mustang line. Seriously, GM and Chrysler both hit the ponycar dead on, and the innovator is about to fail. Sad really

Exactly! That is what made the Mustang so popular in the first place, cheap power. Then there came out so much cheap power that people equated the looks of a mustang with a lot ot power and it is essentially Pavlovs Dogs is the only reason people like the stang and some seem to forget why.
