John Lingenfelter had run a 6.99 @ 197 mph and was the top qualifier of the Pro Class. During the first round of eliminations in which Lingenfelter had a bye run, he made a valiant attempt at breaking the Pro Class record of 6.93 @ 195 mph recently set by George Ioannou of Bullish Motor Racing. The Summit sponsored Cavalier left the line like a champ posting a 1.07-second short time. But he blew the tires loose causing the Cavalier to get out of shape and got out of the throttle before things got worse. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case during the second round of eliminations against R.J. Simrock and his APC /AEBS sponsored Ford Focus. Lingenfelter got a huge jump on Simrock after the Focus bogged slightly after launching but as Simrock was rapidly closing in something went wrong at the top end. The Cavalier lost traction on the rapidly cooling track, fishtailed, crossed the centerline, and smacked the retaining wall at over 130 mph rolling all the way down to the run-off area. Lingenfelter was then airlifted to a local hospital where he was being treated for injuries sustained in the crash. At this point there is no official word on the status of Lingenfelter. As a result of the crash and lateness of the hour, all racing was rescheduled to resume Monday October 28th at 10 am local time.
Last I heard he was seriously injured and was actually dead. They revived him and he may very well be paralized. For those who don't know, or weren't around; John Lingenfelter has been doing amazing things with Chevy's for years. Twin turbo vettes' and the like where his fortay. He was sure to become the modern Carrol Shelby.
