Default Hyundai and IBM team up

Hyundai and IBM have announced a joint venture that would allow the Korean automaker to offer telematics services for their vehicles. Currently there are 14 brands offering telematics on their vehicles in North America, with 32 brands world-wide.

The services provided by this joint venture are expected to debut in June 2003 for the Korean market. It is unknown when these services will appear on Hyundai's bound for North America. IBM's telematics customers include BMW, Audi, Peugeot, Honda and DaimlerChrysler.

Hyundai is also building its first US plant in Montgomery, Alabama. Scheduled to open in 2005, the USD 1 billion plant will build 300,000 units annually.

The services that will be provided as a result of this venture include:
- airbag deployment notification
- remote stolen-vehicle tracking via GPS
- GPS capabilities for real-time traffic by map or voice response
- news, stock, weather, email and Internet capabilities via text or voice response
- PDA/mobile phone data synchronization
- 24 hr assistance and concierge services

Awesome! I wonder if they will make retro fit kits for models that didn't originally come with that option.
