For GT-R, Nissan calls for Super Mechanic
NASHVILLE — No ordinary dealer technician will be able to work on the new GT-R sports car when it hits the U.S. market next June.
It will be a job for Super Mechanic.
That is the title given to a new designation of service personnel who will be certified to work on the GT-R.
Nissan's U.S. dealers will get their first details this week by mail about the car that Nissan Motor Co. hopes will boost its brand image. All dealers will receive the GT-R, but the $70,000 car is about twice the price of Nissan's current sports car, the 350Z. Servicing the car will be a new challenge for Nissan.
The Super Mechanic will tune the car's engine to factory specs once a year for free for three years. Wheels will be aligned, and transmissions will be adjusted for free.
To do that, a dealership will first have to select a technician and send him or her to Japan for four weeks of GT-R training. Courses include engineering presentations, traditional training classes and racing-speed test driving.
