Cadillac to unveil CTS
2003 CTS to debut at Pebble Beach Concours

Cadillac's all-new Catera replacement, the CTS, will make its public debut at the Pebble Peach Concours d'Elegance in Monterey, California, USA on August 18. Due to enter production late this year as a 2003, the CTS incorporates various historical design cues and is " the first 100 percent application of Cadillac's art and science approach to passenger car design."

Built on the all-new Sigma rear-wheel drive platform, CTS's standard 3.2L, 4-cam V6 produces 220 hp/164 kW @ 6,000 rpm and 218 ft-lb/296 Nm of torque @ 3,400 rpm, sufficient to propel it from rest to 60 mph/97 km/h in under seven seconds with a five-speed manual transmission. The engine's 54· bank angle was chosen to accommodate various packaging requirements, including the potential for both longitudinal and transverse layouts. A five-speed automatic transmission (the same GM Hydra-Matic 5L40-E used in the BMW 5 Series and X5) will be optional. It features "Sport," "Winter," and "Economy" modes and will provide engine braking in all five gears in addition to the ability to hold a gear through a corner, giving it sportier capabilities compared with a more conventional automatic.

The CTS designation is significant in that future Cadillacs will also carry alphanumeric model names to help them fit into the global market, where this practice is more common than in the US. In a departure from Cadillac tradition, the CTS interior will emphasize comfort and convenience rather than opulence. For example, the use of wood will be confined to actual customer contact areas, such as the steering wheel, shift knob, and door pulls, rather than the instrument panel. According to Cadillac, "The emphasis is on craftsmanship and contemporary luxury." The CTS will be built at GM's all-new USD 550 million plant in Lansing, Michigan.
