UPDATES!!!!!
I'm seriously thinking of getting one of these for the ranch. At first, I was looking at a Polaris ATV of some kind, then this came to mind several days later and thought how cool it would be. Not to mention cheaper.
Any recommendations on what to look for? Year, options?

Not sure if the newer samurais get you fuel injection. If so,it would be worth looking at something newer. Also, decide if you want a soft or Tin top. Hard top conversions are hard to find and expensive!
Other then that, I just found one that ran and passed emissions, body was fairly straight with minimal rust. Figured they are old enough and I was gonna modify it anyway.
Threw on some Jeep fender flares this year and found myself a hardtop.

There's actually 2 tin tops for sale in my area. An 86 and 88. But, I'd like something that everyone can hop into, so a soft top with a rear bench would be best. Also has to have AC.
It looks like the EFI was introduced in 1990. It only gained 2hp. Was it that much more reliable? Are you having bad issues with the carb?

Fuel injection is less sensitive to odd angles, for one. Not sure about Samurais specifically but in offroaders I like the fine throttle control better with fuel injection. In low range it usually corrects better if you're trying to idle through something rather than bucking and dying.

Oh damn! That RHD import looks sick!! Stock turbo?!? Thats something to maybe look into...
No problems with the carb. It actually runs pretty damn well! I was thinking for tuning it would better to have fuel injection. Utilize a piggy back or stand alone. Ive done neither so far, just running all stock in that department.
It's a great alternative to the AVT side by sides out there. It's slower on the trails then those high dollar luxury AVTs, but, it's great to have a licensed vehicle you can still use in the city year round. Plus, it's nice being able to flat tow it and not have to tow around and store a trailer.
