What To Look For When Getting 99 Tiburon Turbochardged
Hi guys,
i been away a while getting my hands dirty at restoration attempts. But decided to drop by for some advice as i doubt anyone knows more about tibs then you guys.
I decided to sell my 83 rx-7 gsl, and got offered to trade it in for a 99 tiburon turbocharged.
I have the same year automatic tib so this might be a good deal.
but i don't have much experiance with turbos, so what should i check for when i decide to go see the car and how it runs.
My only other turbo experiance was with a 92 supra.
Sorry if this is a wrong section of the forum, couldn't find a better location.
Thanks ^^

Please read and follow the forum rules, your signature is WAY too big.
The proper place for this wouldn't be other vehicles, it would be Power Adders. Read the descriptions to the subforums. Moved.

Three major ones I would do probably:
1) See what they are using for engine management. Fuel/Timing/etc. Drive the car, check if it misfires, check if it has CELs, etc. If it has a wideband that would help as well to see A/F readings.
2) Check the compression in the motor. Sort of goes back to #1 - the Tiburon motor being high compression can get hit hard if its not tuned properly.
3) Check the turbo for shaft play. Most expensive part of the turbo system, and the one most susceptible to breaking. Make sure its good.
These are the easiest and most important that I can think of that wouldn't require much effort or time.

whos tib is it?
check the turbo for shaft play
check the comp side for oil, and rev it up in neutral, see if theres any blue smoke.
take it for a hard drive and have someone drive behind you and look for blue smoke.
check around the oil pan and head to see if the oil lines are leaking or not.
when you rev it up, listen for any metal to metal sounds coming from the turbo. if there are, there is probably to much slop and the wheel is rubbing the turbine/comp housing.
also do a compression test to make sure the owner didnt ruin the motor. all numbers should be 200+psi
see what is being used for tuning (electronics, fueling, etc.) ask who it was tuned by and what psi hes running, and what the AFRs are around WOT. if he doesn't have good answers to these, id look into it alot closer.

You want to make sure you can read a/f ratios. The person that turbo'd the car should have put one in. It's very important that the car doesnt run too lean because that can damage the motor. You will have to change the oil a bit more often than normal.
Having a turbo charged car is basically all the same no matter what make and model. Take a look around our power adders form for hints, tips and problems others have had.

a properly done kit will look good and work fine
if it's ghetto looking it must at least run fine
who did the turbo conversion?
when was it done?
what are the parts used? (turbo, manifold, fueling....)
