Other mods that work with a Supercharger
Hi all-
Until 10 minutes ago, I was pretty convinced that I wanted to remain N/A - for a variety of reasons. Now I'm seriously considering a blower. My questions is, of the modifications that I had planned on buying, which will still work with an Alpine S/C. I know that cams are out, but what about:
Lightened Flywheel
Underdrive Pully (I'm not really convinced I want this)
Headers and 2.5 inch exhaust
Also, what do you guys think about the "pre programmed" unichip that they include. There are no unichip tuners in Portland, OR and I am more interested in the SMT-6.
Thanks!
Neal

The underdrive pulley would be BAD. Remember that your SC would be driven from this same pulley and if you get an underdrive pulley then you won't see as much boost from you SC. Now if I were you I would go turbo instead. SC's eat gas mileage but a turbo can actually help gas mileage. You'd probably spend just as much money if not more on a SC as you would a comparable turbo kit. You can expand a turbo kit later as well and push a LOT more power out of it in the long run. The SC is pretty much what you see is what you get. My opinion would be, if you're going to spend $3000-$3500 on a SC, just spend that on a turbo kit and you could get Turbo, Exhaust Manifold, charge piping, intercooler, BOV, injectors, pistons, fuel pump, gaskets, clutch, fuel/ignition control, and maybe even con. rods. It's your choice but with the above setup you could push more than 275whp and with a SC it's like around 190whp or something.

Yeah, like Russ said mang, the Tib isn't really SC friendly. Not the first 2 gens anyways. Random has a SC'd Elantra, same engine and all, and it barely makes any extra HP. Now, after the Unichip gets replaced or such, you may see HUGE gains, but I doubt it.
Get your IM and TB done, CAI, and the other standards, and save up for the CNK Turbo $2700, or the new Alpine if it gets done.
When i showed up here I was planning on a SC too, now I wouldn't get one at all, turbo all the way.

crap. you guys are killing my decision of getting a SC. Anyways, I am not doing that mod till next year so I still have time to decide. I was sold on the SC though.
I have a question though. I was going to get camshafts in the meantime, but now , am I to understand from above that this is a bad idea if planning a SC? WHY? Please tell.
What about having high cams with a turbo setup?
totally undecided

Well to let shed some light on the Alpine S/C. It does not eat up gas mialage myth number one I still get 30+ to the gallon. Beleive me I was surprised. The S/C that Random has is the one I have. What my kit consist of right now isjust a rising rate FPR and a reflashed ecu from Real Racing. Current HP and Trq are as follows 147hp at 141 trq. Thats running at 4 psi. Now the only mods I have are custom cat-back of 2.25 inch and random special cai. Also I do NOT have a 5th injector. Running stock injectors. What Alpine plans on doing is going back to the unichip but staying away from 5th injector. Reason going back is there access to to fine tune with further upgrades. The SMT-6 would work just fine and alows you to mess with the tuning.
Once I have bigger injectors and better fuel pump and headers more hp woohoo. The only prob with second gen s/c is the lack of space for the aqua cooler. If I had that on I could probably run 6psi safely maybe even 8psi. Granite with all mods stated above. But if yu want to be like everybody else go turbo. LOL I like being differant. Plus my trq is like isn't nitrous. Once Alpine is done doing upgrades I am going to do some of my own. LOL If you can guess what two items you get a cookie.

I have the Alpine s/c on my gen1 tib, and have the following mods -
bbtb
421 headers
aftermarket exhaust
cams
induction kit
FPR
Unichip
I am making around 137bhp at the wheels, but the car is in the shop at the moment having a water injection kit fitted and the pulley size reduced. The new clutch and lightened and balanced flywheel have also gone in.
I'm getting the car back on Saturday, so I will be able to tell you then what power I am getting.

Both Turbo chargers and superchargers will hurt your fuel economy. NEITHER one is a device to aid in fuel economy. They are power adders. The only way to add more power, is to add more air AND FUEL. If you add FUEL, you loose fuel Economy.
That being said, both SC's and Turbo's affect fuel economy in about the same way, so one is no worse than the other.
Mods that work with a supercharger.
headers/exhaust
Cams
Intake
Tuning (S-AFC, SMT-6, Haltec, etc)
Head work, (porting, valve work)
However, what works on a N/A car will not work on a S/C car. The wrong cam timing with too little backpressure in the exhaust would be a bad thing. You'd loose boost out the exhaust ports before the exhaust valves closed. (turbo's don't have this problem[much] due to backpressure caused by the turbo manifold and turbo).
BTW...techcontib. Alpine told me they install a smaller pully to raise your SC from 4.2 lbs to 5.5 lbs.

5.5 pounds yikes it should get more hp then. I need to run a boost guage on this beast. I thought he told me like 4.5 I was being concervative.
My gas mileage is as so:
Hwy 30+
Cty 20+ But thats because i race to each light lol
