is a MAF to Map conversion really necessary?
it was told to me that at WOT, MAF equipped engines will lean out when boosted. has anyone else that's boosted a tib had this prob? Random? anyone? also, who has a standalone ECU that they're pleased with, or more importantly, HASN"T blown their engine up with. i'm trying to decide which is best based on my knowledge and the experiences of others. thanks. (yeah, i read the book)

The only problem I know of with our MAF based setup and boost, is the MAF maxing out it's air flow reading.
The ECU Triggers a CEL anytime the MAF reads OVER 21.9 Pound feet of air per minute. The only way around that is to "clamp" the voltage returned to the ECU so that the ECU doesn't see over that figure. The problem is...if you are getting more air than that...you will run lean unless you modify the injector signal appropriately.
A low boost setup (under 8PSI) should not trigger the MAF/ECU limit. Anything over that might.
For the record...21.9 #/FT per min = 290 CFM give or take 10 CFM for atsmopheric conditions.

You asked about the folks running standalones and liking them...
I'm running a Haltech E6K standalone and wouldn't trade it for anything else. The price was great, the user interface is a bit dated-looking but very functional and not hard to understand. The full range of options is excellent, the tuning is easy to understand and visualize. Overall, it's an excellent unit.
I have no problem believing this unit will control whatever power I throw into this engine.
