Hello,

After getting my car back together and doing some spirited driving again an Evo 10 today, I started to get a horrible blue smoke of of the valve cover nipples and slight smoke from the exhaust. Currently have a catch can installed as well as NGM valve good for 40psi in place of the stock PCV valve.

Car is currently running and idling properly, just loads of smoke out of the catch can with actual oil buildup. I have not done a compression test, but I have checked the oil and coolant for signs of head gasket failure, but there has been no mixing from either.

I'm going to lean towards either bad piston rings or valve seals. The smoke has been pouring out of the exhaust nipple on the valve cover. I have some pictures, and will post them later. The car currently has the stock camshafts and intake manifold currently, just with low compression pistons. Thanks for the help.

Is the crankcase being pressurized?

Pull the dipstick and listen for the sound of air being released.

Did a compression test today. I'll post the pictures and since they do most of the explaining.

Cylinder 1:

Cylinder 2:

Cylinder 3:

Cylinder 4:

Cylinder one and four had oil on the plugs when they were pulled. Cylinder two and three did not. Going to be dropping the pan and pulling the crank down to see the chaos this week. I'm happy it held up that much. smile.gif

Ouch. What kind of rings did/do you have? Never thought of them as being a weak point, but it sure opens up my eyes.

Ya, it definitely looks like you have a problem. You can also pull the valve cover and inspect the valves/springs. I think you might have a partially melted piston or head problems. Leak down test would tell you more information.

Were those stock pistons? If so, welcome to the club and I hope you don't have to replace the block.

(stock Beta pistons have been known to shatter a little bit, around the top ring lands)

P.S. I think you might have a minor problem with your #2 cylinder there. owned.gif

Frozen- I believe they were Wiseco pistons. They held up fairly well to the abuse I gave them. Guess 32psi was a bit much, ehh?

Denisst99-Going to either order a new piston/ring kit or get a rebuild kit from ImportShark.

tanc-I'd believe it to be more piston related. I may have access to a leakdown test this week.

Stocker-Stock pistons would not of lasted at the levels of boost I was running. haha.gif

Well, since the funds aren't there to do a motor build until winter, I'll be picking up a higher mileage engine for $150 from the junkyard and seeing how that likes boost. I'm going to change the timing belt and water pump and have some fun this summer.
