Best way to flare 3" cold side pipe
 

How do you flare 3" cold side pipe so connectors have something to grip? I need to cut and hack up a cold side to make some changes...how do you get the 'bump' on the ends of the piping so elbows and adapters won't pop off under boost?

You either buy the proper tool, or you go to an exhaust shop and have them do it while you wait. With the proper tool it's painless. Without . . . you better be VERY handy but you can DIY.

You can do it for free. Go to an auto parts store that does loaner tools. Get yourself the largest exhaust tip expander they have . You will also need a tbolt clamp.



The idea is to use the tbolt clamp to hold one end of the expander so it.allows the other end of.the expander to flare out. Adjust the expander so its close to the size of the pipe. Insert it and then secure the tbolt clamp. Now, start expanding the expander and it should.flare out inside the pipe, giving you a rolled bead. Make sure you insert the expander an inch or so in so you get a bead and you don't just simply flare the pipe. If you flare the pipe, you will risk sharp edges that can cut into your silicone couplers.



Its easy, cheap, and has worked on all my charge pipes with up to 16 lbs of boost so far.

I just TIG welded 4 1" sections on the very edge of the pipe.



There is one benefit you get from bead rolling other than holding the hose better, it increases the strength of the end of the pipe as to prevent it from crushing when a t-bolt clamp is used to secure the coupler to the pipe.
