Default balance a turbo

I have a 68mm wheel from a gt4094r turbo. I am wondering if I grab a couple gt40 style compressor covers that are made for the 68mm wheel if I could just bolt the wheel and compressor on without having the assembly balanced? The turbo was a 100 bucks, the wheel was 30, and a gt40 compressor housing at 275. So I am around 400 bucks for the turbo.

Can you, maybe. Should you, probably not. But you already suspected that or you wouldn't have asked.

One of the benefits of a ball bearing turbo is continued efficiency at higher turbo RPM. The downside is that it needs to be precisely balanced to be stable at those higher speeds, personally I wouldn't expect it to last long. It may work for a while but even a slight imbalance will accelerate bearing wear, and if you wear out the bearings in a DBB turbo you're looking at a new CHRA. get it balanced if you do it.

that's a pretty big turbo, what are you putting this on?
