The 96-01 tiburons all use the stronger version and the elantra had it until 6/3/00. As to the gearing. I think Red has a little better idea than I do. You could also spend some time on HMA to try and figure out which one has better gearing.

Well, outside of my crack habit making me remember wrong engine years you want to aim for a 2.0L Elantra transmission and a differential with the older-style part number on the pinion shaft pin.

Did we agree that 1998 Elantras had the 2.0L option? If so, that's a good year to go look at for a donor tranny.

For those who asked for a reason:

The 2.0L Elantras (not according to HMAWebtech, but according to the shop manuals) has slightly taller gearing via a taller final drive ratio. The taller gearing would be better suited for turbocharger application.

Also, the older differentials were stronger than the newer ones. Specifically, the pinion shaft retaining pin would shear off under high load on the newer differentials. This would allow the shaft to start sliding outward, and the pinion gears would begin eating through the aluminum transmission housing. If all the aluminum shards from the bellhousing being eaten didn't destroy your tranny, it would eventually die anyway because the pinion gears would either A: eat completely through the housing or B: shell themselves.

Oh, and as for the time when the pin was changed. I want so say it was 03/99 when Hyundai went to the cheaper pinion pin. But I may also be forgetting that too wink

So what I should get is a 2.0 from a 98 Elantra for the stronger tranny and tall gearing? What do you guys think of the 1.6? The gearing, I mean, for turbo?

Red, 2.0L in Elantra is 99-00 Stonger pinion before 03/00.

To sum this up it looks like a 2.0L Elantra tranny 99 or early 00 model year. The production date of the car should be before 06/03/00.
