What tranny?
I was wondering, what tranny would be best for me to use in a turbocharged application? I've got the 1.6 tranny already, and it has some short ratios, so I'm told. But if I were to get and turbo a 2.0, then what should I use? The 1.6 or the 2.0 tranny?
I'd suggest the tranny from a 2.0L Elantra, 96-98 model year. The older transmissions seemed to have stronger differentials (Onpol is the only guy I know to break an old diff wink ) and the Elantra 2.0L has a slightly taller final according to the actual shop manuals (but HMAWebtech seems to think they're the same??)
That, and in a junkyard, an Elantra probably looks less "profitable" than a Tiburon wink

Brenden, I will break off the beatdown if you wanna party wink That model year of Elantra also had a 2.0L option, they were not ALL 1.8L models. I know because my aunt has a 97 automatic with the 2.0L in it.
In any case, if you get a 2.0L Elantra tranny, you're ready to go.

Red, If your mother has a 97 with the 2.0L than it must be a fluke. Hyundai only installed the 2.0L in Elantras after 08/16/98 for the 99 model year. I wonder if she got a Tiburon powertrain by accident. You could get the Tiburon with 2.0L in 97 and 98
As to the Elantra 5spd, The differential gear is the same on all 96-00 Elantras. The first gear is different they use 43250-28020 until 03/11/96 and then used 43250-28021 until 01 model year. The second through fifth have as many as 5 different part numbers from 96-00.

Hey, nice to see you over here smile.gif
It's actually my aunt, but I'm like REALLY damn sure she's got the 2.0L. Since she's in Kansas, it's a bit hard to go doublecheck wink but dammit... Oh well, just be smoking crack then I guess. Two to One says I'm wrong, so -- well, where's that flipoff smiley?
wink

jmontigny, are you saying that the tranny from the 2.0L 97-98 tib is strong? stronger than the tranny from like the 2k's? i did the auto to manual swap on my 2k tib and put in an 98 tranny. I only bought the 98 trans because it was cheaper at the time, but if it's a stronger tranny than the 2k one, suweet.
The pin in the differential is the only thing I could find different I talked to Red about this a while ago. If he sees this maybe he remembers when they stopped using the stronger version. I will be stopping by work tomorrow I will double check what the prodution date was.
Sorry about the Aunt's car not having the 2.0L Red. I could just picture people searching the country for a 97 Elantra 2.0L transaxle that simply doesn't exist.
